A Dutch national has been arrested and extradited to Germany in connection with a deadly accident two years ago, in which one person died and seven were made ill by drinking from a champagne bottle containing liquid ecstasy.

The man, who is 40, is suspected of distributing the three-litre bottles of Moët & Chandon containing the drugs, the AD reported at the weekend. He is accused of gang-related drugs trafficking as well as homicide and causing bodily harm.

The Dutchman is the second person to be arrested in the investigation. A 35-year-old Polish national was arrested last November but is no longer considered a suspect.

Eight guests at an Italian restaurant in Weiden were made ill by the drug, sold in a bottle costing €490 which had been bought online. They were celebrating the participation of one of their number in a television programme.

A 52-year-old man, said to have taken a big swig from the bottle, died immediately and the others were taken to hospital.

A few days later a similar incident took place in the Netherlands when four people were taken ill after drinking spiked champagne.
