The Netherlands opened their Nations League campaign with a comfortable 5-2 win in Eindhoven against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Joshua Zirkzee crowned his international debut with the opening goal after just 13 minutes when his header crept inside the post, after a shot by Xavi Simons was diverted into his path.

The Balkan nation were sparked into action and deservedly equalised when Ermedin Demirovic finished off a crisp passing move with a low shot into the corner.

But Tijjani Reijnders restored the advantage on the stroke of half-time and Ronald Koeman’s side dominated the second period.

Cody Gakpo extended the lead from close range after 56 minutes, and though Edin Dzeko gave the Dutch a scare when he turned in a long pass, late goals by Wout Weghorst and Simons ensured a scoreline that was by no means flattering.

“We were very good in possession, we looked fast and fresh, the players were finding each other between the lines and we had an excellent spell after the break,” Koeman said.

“You saw a few doubts creep in at 3-2, but that wasn’t the attitude on the pitch. They scored two goals from very little.”

Oranje’s next match is in Amsterdam on Tuesday against Germany, who beat Hungary 5-0 in their opening game on Saturday.
