Twente Enschede pulled off a shock in the Europa League as they came away with a 1-1 draw from their opening match away to Manchester United.

Sam Lammers equalised for the Eredivisie side in the second half after taking the ball off the toes of Christian Eriksen and running into the area before beating Andre Onana at his near post.

Haaksbergen-born United boss Erik ten Hag watched his team of millionaires dominate the early stages, but they could only managed a solitary goal in the first half.

Mees Hilgers blocked Portuguese left-back Diogo Dalot from getting a clean strike as United players swarmed around the penalty area, but the ball ran to Eriksen who hit an unstoppable first-time shot high into the net.

Twente’s goal came out of nothing midway through the second half. This time the Danish midfielder was at fault as he dwelled on the ball too long after intercepting the onrushing Bart Van Rooij, allowing Lammers to nip in and send the 4,000 travelling fans into raptures.

AZ win

The other Dutch team in action in the Europa League on Wednesday, AZ Alkmaar, took all three points in a rollercoaster match at home to Swedish side IF Elfsborg.

Ruben van Bommel scored twice either side of half-time after Elfsborg had taken an early lead, but the Swedes were level again in the 53rd minute when Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro let Simon Hedlund’s shot slip through his fingers.

Van Bommel missed a chance to restore the lead when Troy Parrott found him in space from a counter-attack, but the Irish striker made amends from the penalty spot in the 74th minutes to ensure a 3-2 win.
