The youth wing of the Christian Democrat party CDJA has reported its treasurer to police for embezzling almost €100,000 in party funds.

In total, €96,000 disappeared in the space of a just few days in July, when the organisation had more money than usual in its account because of money from an old election fund, the CDJA board said on its website.

“This temporary and unique situation was taken advantage of,” the board said.

The treasurer said in her defence she had been the victim of a boiler room fraud scheme during which she had been forced to invest ever greater amounts in a non-existent project.

The board said this does not justify her actions and demanded repayment of the whole amount.

Political parties’ youth wings get an annual subsidy from the home affairs ministry. The CDJA was given some €90,000 in 2022.
