Dozens of rush-hour trains through Schiphol airport have been cancelled after an overhead power line failed on Wednesday morning.

Train operator NS said it was running a reduced schedule after the problem was reported at around 7am.

The problems were compounded when a Eurostar star broke down on the line near the airport. Network operator ProRail said it would have to wait for another Eurostar train to tow it from the spot.

Around two-thirds of trains to and from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Leiden are not running and the Intercity service to Hilversum is cancelled altogether. NS said it hoped to have all issues resolved 1pm.

Passengers have been warned to expect congestion and allow extra time for their journey. People travelling from Amsterdam Centraal to the airport are advised to take the metro to Amsterdam Zuid and transfer to the main line there.
