Most normal traffic fines are rising €10 next year, taking the penalty for parking in a disabled driver’s space up to €500, the AD reported on Thursday.

The government’s fine collection agency Centraal Justitieel Incassobureau said the increase is largely on the basis of inflation, which it took to be 3.2% last year. Fines rose 8.6% in 2023.

Last year the public prosecution department warned that some fines for traffic offences are now so high, they risk alienating public support. Some 84% of fines are currently paid on time.

Late payers face a 50% supplement and people who continue to ignore the demand will have to pay double the amount on their ticket. All fines also carry an unchanged €9 administration fee.

Jumping a red light will now cost €310, while cutting into a funeral procession carries a fine of €120. Driving while using a telephone carries a penalty of €430.

Meanwhile, officials said earlier this week they had imposed almost 40,000 fines on drivers who were caught breaking Amsterdam’s new 30 kph speed limit on most roads.

Fines are only issued if drivers are breaking the speed limit by more than 7 kph, the Parool reported.
