Southampton striker and Ghanaian international Kamaldeen Sulemana will not be replacing Steven Bergwijn at Ajax because the deal was registered after the deadline set by the world football body Fifa.

“Ajax has just heard from Fifa that the planned transfer has not been approved,” the Amsterdam club said in a statement. “That is a disappointment, but we understand the decision.”

The Dutch transfer window closed at one minute to midnight on Monday, the deadline for registering deals with Fifa. Ajax had hoped to lease Sulemana from the English club with an option to buy for a reported €20 million.

In total, 755 transfers involving players in the Eredivisie and the Keuken Kampioen Divisie were made in this summer’s window. Of them, 285 were transfers between Dutch clubs, 220 players signed deals to come to the Netherlands and 250 players left the country to play elsewhere, the KNVB said.
