Fewer police should be used at rowdy football stadiums: poll

Seven in 10 people in a new poll think that fewer police should be employed to manage crowds at football matches.

The survey of around 7,600 people who go to football matches by EenVandaag found that 62% thought the numbers should even be halved. This was a verbal parliamentary proposal this summer by D66 liberal democratic party, which argues that clubs should manage their own security and leave police free for other work.

Almost three in 10 people in the survey thought policing should remain as it is during professional matches, despite problems with police capacity.

A report by Bureau Beke for the national police force last year said Dutch football clubs have invested too little in stadium safety, allowing hooliganism to flourish in recent years.

Fourteen people were arrested in Amsterdam on Thursday after a match between Ajax and Turkish club Beşiktaş.
