Dutch tourists spent twice as much in NL than foreign ones
Dutch and foreign tourists spent almost €105 billion in the Netherlands last year, up some €13 billion on 2022, according to new calculations by national statistics agency CBS.
Two-thirds of the spending came from local day trippers and people holidaying at home, while foreign tourists generated some €35 billion in total.
In total, the tourism sector added 9% more value to the Dutch economy last year than it did in 2022, when the impact of the coronavirus pandemic was still being felt.
Tourism now accounts for 3.8% of Dutch GDP and has grown across all sectors, from the hospitality industry to aviation and travel agencies.
Amsterdam, the top destination on tourism lists, has taken a string of measures to cut down on visitors, including bringing in restrictions on cruise ships and upping tourist tax to the highest in the EU.
