PSV Eindhoven were taught a harsh lesson by Italian giants Juventus as they went down to a 3-1 defeat in their opening Champions League match.

Peter Bosz’s side started promisingly in Turin and had the majority of possession, but their inexperienced back line was ruthlessly exploited by the Serie A club’s forwards.

Juventus went ahead after 21 minutes when defender Richard Ledzema gave too much space to Turkish teenage star Kenan Yildiz, who fired a glorious shot into the top corner.

Ten minutes later Argentinian winger Nicolás González skipped away from Matteo Dams on the right-hand side and centred the ball to an unmarked Weston McKennie, who applied the simplest of finishes to make it 2-0.

Gonzáles added a third shortly after half-time after Joey Veerman gave away the ball in the centre of the park and Juventus worked it forward with pace to the Argentinian, who sprung the offside before dispatching a cool finish.

Substitute Ismail Saibari managed to pull a late goal back for PSV, which may yet proved significant in the new-look league format in which 24 of the 36 teams will progress to the next stage.
