Amsterdam short of a million or 13 for its 750th birthday party
Amsterdam local council has collected less than 10% of the €15 million in sponsor money it needs to pay for celebrating the city’s 750th anniversary with just six weeks before the party starts.
Funds so far been have been contributed to by main sponsor Heineken with €750,000 in cash and an unknown amount in beer. Rabobank and diamond company Gassan have also contributed, but the amount so far is much lower than projected.
The amount set aside in 2020 by the council for the year-long celebration was €27 million but organisers said “external finance” of another €15 million was needed to realise the “programming ambitions”, the Parool reported.
According to a council spokeswoman, the whole amount will be forthcoming before the end of the jubilee year. “We are not there yet but the fundraising efforts are continuing apace,” she told the paper.
The celebrations will kick off with a concert in the Ziggo Dome on October 27th and include special editions of Sail, Kwakoe and the Amsterdam Marathon.
Amsterdam will also host the biggest ever Dutch circle party on the A10 ring road. On June 21, the A10 motorway will be partly closed to traffic to allow all sorts of events to take place.
