Utrecht’s Dom tower is back in full view after €40m restoration
Utrecht’s tallest tower, the city centre Domtoren, is again on view after five years of being hidden by scaffolding while renovation work was carried out.
“It is Utrecht again, it feels like coming home,” one local told broadcaster NOS after the last piece of scaffolding was removed this week.

The Dom tower, which is 113.4 metres high, was built as part of a church between 1321 and 1382 but the rest of the building collapsed in the 17th century. The last renovation project was 100 years ago.
In total, over 10,000 new sandstone bricks have been cut and used in the renovation, which has taken five years and almost €40 million to complete.

The old stones have been given a new lease of life in private homes and other buildings, and some are still on sale at a local garden centre to raise money for a new lighting system.
