FC Twente managed a 3-3 draw against Red Bull Salzburg in their Champions League qualifying match on Tuesday night but it was not enough to offset their 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

The Austrian side had taken a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes but a Mees Hilgers header made it 2-1 just before half time. A minute into the second half it was 1-3 for the visitors. An Alec van Hoorenbeeck header with 25 minutes on the clock boosted Twente hopes again, and three minutes before time, Sem Steijn equalised.

“We really wanted to win but you can see that when we play less well, we are punished,” coach Joseph Oosting said after the game. “That is top level football for you.”

Twente, who finished third in the Dutch league last season, will now take part in the Europa League competition group stage, while Salzburg will move on to the Champions League play-offs.

In the Europa League qualifying competition, Ajax meet Greek side Panathinaikos at home on Wednesday night in their qualification battle, having won the first leg 1-0.

Feyenoord and PSV both automatically qualified for the Champions League competition at the group stage.
