Snoop Dogg lends his name to Amsterdam coffee shop

Rapper Snoop Dogg has become the second American celebrity marijuana smoker to invest in an Amsterdam cannabis café.

Last year boxer Mike Tyson became co-owner of a coffee shop on the city’s central Spuistraat and now Snoop Dogg has lent his name to the former Funky Munkey weed outlet on the Marnixstraat.

Since Thursday, the coffee shop has new name – Smoke Weed Every Day – and smart interior featuring homages to the artist. The menu itself, according to the press release, “features a unique blend of high-quality products, exclusive strains, artisanal edibles and top-tier cannabis accessories, all hand picked by Snoop himself”.

The Amsterdam outlet is SWED’s second store and the first opened in Los Angeles earlier in July. “Amsterdam has always embraced cannabis and so have I,” the rapper said in the statement. “It’s only right that I bring SWED global to this iconic city that understands the joy of great cannabis and a good time.”

On Thursday morning, the smell of weed smoke drifted out across the pavement. Inside, a handful of people were sitting at tables, while at the long bar, assistants were busy polishing glasses as music played.

Snoop was not at the opening – apparently, he remains in Paris where he was a torch bearer at the Olympic games. And according to the Parool, neither he or Tyson are actually owners of the coffee shop licences, given the Netherlands strict rules and the ban on opening new outlets.

The Parool says both licences are in the name of local businessman Rachid Bahida, and it is unclear how he became involved with the big American names. Dutch News has approached Death Row Cannabis for comment.
