Defending title holder Sifan Hassan took the silver medal in the 5,000 metres at the Paris Olympics on Monday night, moving up from the bronze position after the disqualification of Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon.

Beatrice Chebet of Kenya took the gold, and the bronze went to Nadia Battocletti of Italy.

Kipyegon was disqualified following a collision with Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia in the early stages of the race.

Hassan takes part in the 10,000 metres on Friday and in the marathon on Sunday, the last day of the games.

Earlier in the day it became clear that Marit Bouwmeester was certain of the gold medal in the ILCA 6 sailing event, after building up such a lead that she cannot be overtaken in Tuesday’s medal race.

Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom had been the only sailor with a chance of catching the Dutchwoman, who is 36 and first took the title in Rio in 2016.

On the hockey pitch, the Dutch women’s team beat Britain 3-1 in the quarter finals and will now meet Argentina in the semis later in the week. The Dutch are defending Olympic champions and hot favourites for the title.

In the 3×3 basketball, the Dutch are certain of silver or gold after beating Lithuania in the semi finals. They take on France in the final.

On Sunday evening, Marianne Vos took the silver medal in the women’s cycling road race, completing the distance in just over four hours. Kirsten Faulkner of the US took gold and Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky the bronze.

It is the first time in 12 years that Vos has won an Olympic medal. She won gold in the road race at the London games.
