Saturday’s Pride canal parade netted 101 tonnes of rubbish
Amsterdammers may be complaining bitterly about the amount of rubbish on the city’s streets at the moment, but council officials cleaned up over 101 tonnes of garbage left behind by revellers after Saturday’s Pride canal parade.
Last year the garbage mountain totalled 81 tonnes.
In particular, a lot of glass had been dumped on the street and in litter bins this year, officials said. The clean-up campaign started around midnight and was done by 6.30 in the morning. In total, 17 crews were involved.
City water company Waternet also fished rubbish from the canals including plastic dolphins, disco glitter balls, balloons and parking signs on top of the usual plastic and tin cans, the Parool reported.
The parade attracts hundreds of thousands of people and this year passed off without any problems, the organisers say.
