The rich Dutch are likely to stay rich, with the wealthiest 1% of the population 20 years ago remaining among the country’s most well off, the government’s macro-economic forecasting agency CPB said on Tuesday.

All but 6% of the very richest Dutch in 2006 were still among the wealthiest 10% in 2022, the CPB said. Most of them made their money through private enterprise.

The richest 1% have at least €4.6 million in assets, while the wealthiest 0.01% have over €62 million at their disposal, most of which is in the form of equity in one or more companies. Major shifts in wealth are due to live-changing situations such as death or corporate bankruptcy, the CPB said.

Rising house prices are a major part of the increase in wealth among people with more moderate incomes and have widened the gap between home owners and tenants, the CPB said.
