The Dutch women’s hockey team have won the gold medal for the fifth time in Olympic history, beating China in the shoot-out after the match ended 1-1 in regular time.

The win means the Dutch hockey teams won both gold medals at the Paris games, consolidating the country’s reputation as a leading hockey nation.

The Netherlands is now the most successful country since hockey was introduced as an Olympic sport, winning eight gold, six silver and six bronze medals.

Earlier in the day, there was also Dutch success in cycling, with Harrie Lavreysen taking gold in the individual sprint event. Earlier in the week, Lavryesen was part of the Dutch team which won the team sprint title.

Lisa van Belle and Maike van der Duin, both Olympic debutants, won bronze in the Madison, an endurance cycling race involving teams of two.

Also on Friday, Sifan Hassan won the bronze medal in the 10 kilometres. The defending champion finished in third place behind Beatrice Chebet of Kenya and Nadia Battocletti of Italy. On Tuesday, Hassan won bronze in the 5,000 metres and on Sunday she takes part in the marathon.

If she wins a medal in the marathon, she will be the first woman in history to win a medal at the Olympics in all three distances.

The Netherlands now have 13 gold medals, their biggest ever total. Adding six silver and 10 bronze to the list, the Dutch are now in eighth place in the medals table.
