Dutch government offices have been hit by major IT failings on Wednesday, with the emergency services, coastguard and the Digid system all affected.

The emergency phone number 112 is still operating but the outage has hit communication between the various emergency services, broadcaster NOS said.

Defence ministry workers also report problems logging in. “We don’t know the cause,” the ministry said on social media. “In some cases there is an impact on our services because telephone numbers are unavailable. We are working hard to solve it.”

According to broadcaster RTL, infrastructure minister Barry Madlener has said the outage has been caused by a defence ministry problem. Sources told the broadcaster is was a “physical” problem.

The National Cyber Security Centre also told RTL there is a problem in a data centre, which means “various users and their IT services” have been hit.

The parliamentary website is still live but the in-house network used by MPs is also down, the Telegraaf reported.

Airport

Eindhoven airport was earlier closed to air traffic because of a network outage but it is still unclear if there is a link with the problems affecting government departments.

However, a spokeswoman confirmed that all flights have been halted, including military traffic, which could indicate a connection. Eindhoven airport is also home to a military base.

Ryanair, Transavia and Wizz Air are among the airlines that operate flights to and from the southern city thousands of passengers have been stranded.
