The young couple and their 2-year-old child from Urk who were among the holidaymakers trapped under the rubble of a German hotel which collapsed around 11 pm on Tuesday have been saved.

Eight people are thought to have been trapped but some have since been freed by emergency services, the Dutch woman and her 2-year-old child among them.

Her husband was still caught under the debris but was freed later on Wednesday morning, local paper Het Urkerland reported. He was taken to hospital with unknown injuries but is in a stable condition, the paper said.

Two people are now known to have died in the incident, which took place in Kröv on the river Moselle, a popular tourist destination. Some 14 people were staying in the two-storey building at the time, five of whom made it out on their own, German media reported.

Emergency services had trouble reaching the trapped people because they say more of the building may collapse.

The cause is still unclear but witnesses reported a loud bang and smoke coming from the building around the time it collapsed. The local fire service said that building work had been carried out recently.
