Dutch sportsmen and women added more medals to their Olympic haul on Saturday as the Paris games enter their second week.

Karolien Florijn scored a first for the Netherlands by taking the title in the women’s single sculls, dethroning defending champion Emma Twigg in the process.

Florijn’s victory comes after her brother, Finn Florijn, won gold in men’s quadruple sculls earlier this week. “I can’t be any happier than this. It is the top point of my life,” she told reporters shortly after the finish.

Elsewhere on the rowing course, the men’s eight took the silver medal behind Britain, and Simon van Dorp won bronze in the men’s single sculls.

In total, the Dutch have clinched eight medals in the rowing competition, including four golds and that is double coach Eelco Meenhorst’s target, broadcaster NOS reported.

By contrast, the judo team was left empty-handed, failing to take any medals at all.

Elsewhere in the competition, Luuc van Opzeeland won bronze in the men’s windsurfing event on Saturday, and Manon Veenstra was the surprise silver medal winner on the BMX bike on Friday evening. It was Veenstra’s first time at the Olympics and she had not been expected to be among the medalists.

Later on Saturday, the cycling competition kicks off and Dutch riders are forecast to pick up another string of medals on the track.

The Dutch are now ninth in the medal’s table with 13 medals, five gold, four silver and four bronze.
