Dutch youngsters arrested for trashing hotel in Mallorca
Nine Dutch youngsters were arrested at Palma de Mallorca’s airport on Sunday after trashing rooms in the hotel where they were staying, local media said on Tuesday.
The nine, aged between 18 and 20, were picked up as they were about to return home. They had been staying at the Palma Bay Club Resort in s’Arenal, a hotel said to be popular with Dutch youngsters.
Cleaners had reported the youngsters had completely wrecked two rooms, smashing a hole in the wall to link the rooms together and damaging televisions. In total, the damage was put at more than €2,000.
The young men appeared in court on Monday morning and refused to give a statement, local media said. They have been released from custody but were forced to hand in their passports until the damage had been paid for.
Locals on the Spanish island have been waging a campaign against excess tourism in recent weeks.
