The 80 Dutch branches of discount shoe shop Bristol in the Netherlands are to close, chief executive Elise Vanaudenhove has told Belgian business paper De Tijd.

The Belgian group has been struggling for some time and applied for court protection from creditors two months ago.

The Belgian arm has now been saved but there is no future for the Dutch unit, Vanaudenhove said. “They are dependent on the Belgian organisation which will go bankrupt and have no future as an independent entity,” she said.

Retail chains Esprit, Scotch & Soda and Adam en Duetz have all recently disappeared from the Dutch high street.
