Attacks continue despite death of “Vlaardingen plumber”

Police have arrested two people for their alleged involvement in another attack on the house of the “Vlaardingen plumber” Ron van Uffelen, who died on Monday.

“Incendiary devices” were found early on Wednesday morning, police said, but none went off.

Two men were arrested in a car on the A4 later that morning who police suspect were involved in placing the objects near the house. Police wouldn’t confirm if Van Uffelen’s wife and children were at home.

Van Uffelen (45), whose house and business premises were firebombed over 20 times since the attacks started in April 2023, suffered a heart attack at a friends’ house at the weekend and died in hospital on Monday.

The attacks prompted Vlissingen mayor Bert Wijbenga to order Van Uffelen to leave his house and the area three times because of the dangers to his neighbours. Last month he was allowed to return to his house following a period of calm.

Police arrested some of the fire-bombers, one of whom has been given a 14-month jail sentence. None of the perpetrators have spoken about the reasons behind the attacks or who paid them to carry them out. Van Uffelen himself has always maintained he did not know why he had been singled out.

“Of course, I was asked by police what the reason might be. But I can’t say anything if I’m not sure,” he said in an interview with the AD.

The family of the man have asked for more police protection following the latest incident.

The public prosecution office has offered a reward of €50,000 for the tip-off that will lead to the arrest of the paymaster.
