Ajax eases into Europa League with 3-0 win over Jagiellonia
Amsterdam football club Ajax eased to a 3-0 home win against Polish champions Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday evening, consolidating their placement in this season’s Europa League championships.
Ajax beat the Poles 1-4 in the first leg last week. New buy Wout Weghorst watched from the stands while the goals were scored by Kian Fitz-Jim, Kenneth Taylor and Brian Brobbey.
The draw for the group stage of the competition takes place later on Friday.
The match was marred by trouble elsewhere in the Dutch capital, however, and several arrests were made after clashes between police and Jagiellonia fans in and around the Dam in the centre of the city. Three police officers were injured.
Champions League
In the Champions League, in which PSV and Feyenoord are both involved, the draw for the new-look competition was made earlier on Thursday.
In the new set up, there is no group and all 36 teams play eight matches, four at home and four away. Their opponents are picked by computer.
The results are then compiled into a ranking and the best eight will go forward automatically to the round of 16. The teams ranked 9 to 24 will then play each other to determine the other eight. The losers will then be out of the competition and will not move down to the Europa League, as in the past.
PSV will meet Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine, Sporting (Portugal) and Girona (Spain) at home, and Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Red Star Belgrade and Brest away.
Feyenoord will play away against Girona as well as Manchester City, Benfica and Lille. At home the Rotterdammers will take on Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Salzburg, and Sparta Prague.
