Twin baby pandas born in Dutch zoo, but one dies soon afterwards
The giant pandas at the Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen have produced two more babies, but one of the twins died shortly after it was born on Friday, the zoo authorities have confirmed.
Wu Wen gave birth on Friday evening. The first baby was lively and immediately the focus of its mother’s interest, the zoo said. The second baby, which was clearly smaller, was born an hour later and died.
The surving baby, whose sex has yet to be determined by a vet, will be given a Chinese name in 100 days time. Mother and baby will remain in the nest area for several months and are being monitored by camera.
The new arrival is the second offspring for the pandas, who have been at the zoo on loan since 2017. That baby, born in May 2020, went back to China in September 2023.
The baby will stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of four years. Wu Wen and Xing Ya will return to China in 2032.
