Three primary schools in Rotterdam have been closed on Wednesday after police received an anonymous tip warning of a potential “violent demonstration”.

Police said the tip-off concerned the Dominicus Kindcentrum on Noorderhavenkade. Two neighbouring schools, Jenaplanschool De Blijberg and Daltonschool De Margriet, have also closed as a precaution.

A spokesman said police were taking the threat seriously, but were unable to say who was behind the demonstration. “It’s an anonymous report, so we can’t verify it.”

The tip was received via the anonymous crime hotline Meld Misdaad Anoniem, local media channel Rijnmond reported.

In a letter to parents, the management of the Dominicus Kindcentrum said the school had been closed out of concern for the safety of staff and children.

“The choice for us was whether to continue with ‘normal’ lessons tomorrow or choose the safe option,” the school wrote. “To avoid taking unnecessary risks we have decided to keep Dominicus Kindcentrum closed tomorrow.”
