Two young holidaymakers from Venlo who fell off a balcony at a holiday flat in the Spanish coastal resort of Lloret de Mar at the weekend are in hospital with severe injuries, local broadcaster L1 reported.

The two were part of a group of 12 older teenagers who decided to take a group photo on the balcony to celebrate their arrival when one of the railings gave way. Three of the boys ended up on the balcony of the floor below. The third teen escaped with minor injuries.

One of the boys is in intensive care with head injuries and fractures to his face. He is said to be in a stable condition, L1 said.

The other boy broke his knee cap and two vertebrae and will have to wear a corset for the next eight weeks before he can be flown back to the Netherlands.

Some of the teenagers went home after the accident while others stayed on at a different location, the broadcaster said.
