One in five people did not go on holiday in 2023: CBS
One in five people in the Netherlands did not go on holiday last year, a survey by national statistics agency CBS has shown.
The main reason was a preference for staying at home, the CBS found. Homebodies included people between 45 and 65 in particular.
Other reasons included poor health and financial challenges. Among the respondents in the lowest income bracket, 38% stayed at home compared to just 8% among the well-heeled.
A lack of time, study or family obligations were also mentioned. Some 40% of people over 75 don’t go on holiday compared to 12% of youngsters between 15 and 25.
Of the people who did pack their bags, a third kept an eye on extreme weather conditions, the Dutch bureau for tourism and conferences NBTC found.
“People are more inclined to opt for a staycation or go to more northern countries instead of southern Europe for fear of getting caught in a bushfire,” NBTC director Jos Vranken told broadcaster NOS. July and August are becoming less popular, Vranken said, with more people looking to get away in May, June and September.
