Air France-KLM has issued a profits warning because holidaymakers are expected to avoid flying from Paris during this summer’s Olympic Games.

The Dutch-French flag carrier is anticipating a loss of between €160 million and €180 million between June and August as French travellers choose to delay their holidays or depart from other cities, or both.

“International markets show a significant avoidance of Paris,” the company said in a press release on Monday.

“Travel between the city and other destinations is also below the usual June-August average as residents in France seem to be postponing their holidays until after the Olympic Games or considering alternative travel plans.”

The profits warning relates to Air France and its subsidiary Transavia France, indicating that KLM does not expect its Amsterdam-based operations to be seriously affected.

The French capital is hosting the Olympic Games between July 26 and August 11. The Paralympics will begin on August 28, but the airline does not expect passenger numbers to be affected.
