Some 80% of adults in the Netherlands are happy with their social life, the annual survey by the national statistics agency CBS into social cohesion and wellbeing has shown.

The figure is slightly up on 2022 but still lower than in 2020 when coronavirus struck. By contrast the number of people who were happy with the amount of leisure time, which went up during the pandemic, has now gone down again.

In 2023, 80% of the 7,000 respondents said their social life was satisfactory while 5% said they it was not. Around 15% said they were neither happy nor unhappy.

Some 84% of respondents said they were happy with their lives in general. That percentage has not changed over the years, the CBS said.

People who have plenty of contact with friends, family and neighbours are happiest. In 2013 85% of people who were in daily contact with family members said they were happy with their social life compared to 65% of people who were not. That gap has now widened to 84% and 45% respectively.
