Judges in Amsterdam have jailed a 36-year-old man for 10 years, followed by treatment in a psychiatric detention centre, for the rape and murder of a 34-year-old sex worker in 2022.

Sander K had faced a 15-year jail term for the murder of Ukrainian national Arina, whom he chopped into 10 pieces after killing her at his home in IJmuiden.

Arina was reported missing on August 21, three days after leaving an Amsterdam hotel and heading for IJmuiden for an appointment. There she was raped, strangled and mutilated. “Her last moments must have been terrible,” the court said in its ruling.

K was identified as a possible suspect on August 23 and police found pieces of her body in a variety of bags and containers while searching his home.

K claims the death was an accident and that Arina voluntarily allowed herself to be tied up, something the court said was “extremely unlikely”.
