Dutch volunteer rescue workers have found the body of a Dutch woman who had  been missing for over a week, local media reported on Monday.

Marjan Roozendaal, who was 73 and in the first stages of Alzheimer’s, went missing a week ago on Sunday when on her way to the swimming pool at a campsite in Vacquires where she was staying with a friend.

French police wound down the search on Tuesday when search dogs could no longer pick up a scent, her daughter Brenda Mol told broadcaster NOS.

At the weekend, Dutch volunteer team RHWW brought in its own search dogs to scour the area. “They  are volunteers but very professional. These people take time off of work to do this sort of thing. It’s very emotional,” she said.

Roozendaal had presumably wandered off into the rugged terrain around Vacquires, which is in the Hérault department north east of Montpelier. It is thought she slipped and fell off a 10-metre high cliff. She was found some 700 metres from the campsite.

“Our hope for a safe return has been dashed,” NOS quoted a statement by the relatives of the dead woman as saying.
