Dutch take to the roads as camper van ownership soars
Camper vans are becoming increasingly popular among both young and old holidaymakers from the Netherlands, according to new research from ABN Amro.
Among the young, camper vans have a “hip image” spurred by digital nomads and have been taken up by social media “influencers” who show off about their adventures, the report said.
At the same time, camper vans are also taking over from caravans among more elderly travellers, due in part to them having more disposable cash.
In addition, the rise in popularity of electric cars, which are not capable of towing large caravans, is also having an impact, ABN Amro said.
The number of registered camper vans in the Netherlands has soared by 170% over the past 13 years, taking the total to almost 200,000. That means 108 of every 10,000 people are a camper van owner, and that is well above the European average.
By contrast, the number of registered caravans fell 11%.
