Vlaardingen foster girl out of danger as questions mount
The 10 year-old-girl who was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries after reportedly being beaten by her foster parents is out of danger, the social work group in charge of her welfare said on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, her condition is still serious and she will continue to require intensive medical care, the William Schrikker youth care agency said.
“We would ask everyone who is not directly involved in her welfare to leave her and her family alone,” the agency said in a statement. “This way, all the focus can go toward her recovery.”
The girl’s foster parents, named as John and Daisy, were remanded in custody for a further 16 days last week in connection with the investigation. They are suspected of attempted murder.
Last week it emerged that the neighbours, the girl’s school and the girl herself had sounded the alarm about her treatment but that she had been left in the care of the couple. Health ministry inspector are now investigating what went wrong.
Sources told the Telegraaf questions were also raised about the suitability of the couple to raise foster children last summer when it turned out they were advertising themselves as swingers on sex websites, and offering to meet others at their home.
In December the child protection council Raad voor de Kinderbescherming described the 37-year-old foster parents as “loving and caring”, even though some officials had raised doubts about their suitability.
The William Schrikker agency had been planning to move her to a new home but agreed to continue the placement with the Vlaardingen couple, on the proviso steps were taken to improve their paedagogic skills, court documents in the hands of De Gelderlander show.
But they repeatedly failed to attend appointments or courses, the paper said.
