Rapper Ali B in court on Voice of Holland sex attack charges
Dutch rapper and television talent show presenter Ali B will appear in court in Haarlem on Wednesday to face two charges of rape and one of sexual assault involving three women connected to the show.
B is the only one of the three men at the centre of a “me too” scandal involving television talent show The Voice of Holland to face legal charges. The public prosecution department decided not to proceed against band leader Jeroen Rietbergen or judge Marco Borsato who were also embroiled in the scandal.
The investigations were started after a report on YouTube channel Boos in early 2022, which claimed several dozen women had been harassed and abused by four men behind the scenes.
After the BOOS broadcast, the public prosecution department appealed for victims to come forward and a formal investigation was started.
B’s lawyer Bart Swier told broadcaster NOS before the start of the three-day trial that his client would answer “all questions” relating to the allegations.
One case centres on claims B raped a women, thought to be singer Ellen ten Damme, in Morocco in 2014. The second alleged victim is a participant in the programme in 2013 and the third is a woman who alleges B raped her in Heiloo in 2018.
