The Netherlands will meet Romania in the round of 16 in this year’s European football championships, following the last of the group games on Wednesday night.

England had been the likely opponent, but Georgia’s 2-0 win over Portugal shifted the composition of the best four third-placed teams. Oranje qualified for the round of 16 by that route.

The winner of the Netherlands v Romania game will meet the winner of the Austria v Turkey match in the quarter finals.

Oranje take on Romania in Munich on July 2 at 6 pm.

The Dutch squad have been slammed for their disappointing performance in the competition so far. Nevertheless, according to data bureau Gracenote, only Spain and Germany are more likely to win the tournament.

This is partly down to Oranje’s placement in what experts say is the less difficult side of the table, so avoiding top sides until later in the competition.
