Dutch participation in Eurovision 2025 is “under consideration”

Dutch public broadcaster AvroTros has issued a statement saying it is not certain that the Netherlands will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest next year, following the problems in Malmo this May.

The broadcaster said “structural changes” need to be made to the festival, following the decision by the organisers to disqualify Dutch entry Joost Klein after an incident involving a camerawoman.

AvroTros said it is taking part in the investigation launched by the European Broadcasting Union, which organises the contest. “AvroTros believes that a broader, more in-depth, and truly independent investigation is needed to address structural problems,” the statement said.

However, the broadcaster said, until it is “confident that structural adjustments will be made to the artists and their musical message back in the centre, we will keep participation in the song contest under consideration.”

According to Swedish media, Klein is facing charges of “criminal intimidation” over his behaviour backstage. “Joost’s behaviour was in clear breach of contest rules, which are designed to ensure there is a safe working environment for all staff and to protect the production,”  the EBU said last month.

AvroTros said on Thursday that it cannot comment in detail while the investigation is ongoing but that “we can say that based on the information we had then and have now, we still believe that the disqualification was unnecessary and disproportionate.”
