A 24-year-old woman has died after police fired shots at a house in Groningen where they had been called to deal with a “threatening situation”.

Police said the incident happened shortly after they arrived at the property on Helperzoom at around 12.30am on Monday.

“A situation arose at the scene whereby an officer felt it necessary to shoot. The woman was seriously injured and died shortly afterwards,” the force said in a statement.

The officer involved was not injured. Police released no further details.

The incident will be investigated by the internal investigations team Rijksrecherche, as is standard when deaths or injuries are linked to the use of police firearms.
