Court orders Dutch Lego fan to stop selling custom train sets
A Dutch Lego enthusiast has been ordered to stop selling custom-made trains using the Danish toy giant’s bricks or pay fines of €1,000 per day.
Hein Alkema was taken to court by Lego, which said his company HA Bricks was breaching its copyright by selling models of real vehicles such as the yellow Dutch NS engine through its website.
The court ordered Alkema to stop selling the sets within 48 hours or be liable to conditional penalties. Lego could also claim €500 for every set sold.
Alkema claimed he had complied with the rules for selling customised Lego sets, but the court said he had broken them by adapting the bricks. He was also ordered to pay €16,000 in legal costs.
