Two 20-year-olds arrested in Utrecht university sexism storm
Two 20-year-old youngsters from Utrecht have been arrested on charges of public insult, slander and libel for circulating a list with the names of female students alongside derogatory comments about them, the AD reported on Friday.
The list, circulated on social media, included the phone numbers and addresses of the young women, 15 of whom have now made a formal complaint to the police.
The lists were circulated among members of a Utrecht fraternity known as the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (USC). The first came to light two weeks ago, the second a week later. The origins of both lists are still being investigated.
Utrecht University and the city’s hbo college stopped giving grants to the student fraternity following the revelations about the first list, which also rated female students on their appearance and performance in bed.
Grants to the fraternity have been frozen until the end of this academic year at least, and its representatives have been told they are no longer welcome at official events.
University and college officials have also told the fraternity it must make a public apology for the list, particularly to the students who were included on it, and draw up a plan to make sure things like this do not happen again.
Legislation to combat sharing personal data, such as names, private addresses and phone numbers online as a means of intimidation, a practice known as doxing, came into effect in the Netherlands on January 1.
