Crown princess Amalia, who was forced to abandon plans to live and study in Amsterdam after organised crime threats were made against her, spent over a year living in Madrid, sources have told broadcaster NOS.

News that threats about the princess had been made in October 2022, forced her to leave the flat she and several friends had rented in the city.

After over a year in the Spanish capital, where she had more freedom to move around, she is now back in Amsterdam, NOS said, although it is unclear exactly when she was living in Spain.

While the threats against her have not diminished, measures have been taken allowing her to have a more normal life, NOS said.

In February last year, Amalia told reporters that “things are still very difficult for me.”

‘I thought I would be doing what a student does, but that is not the reality,’ she said during a visit to the Dutch Caribbean islands with her parents. ‘I miss having a normal life, the student life, walking through the streets and going shopping,’ she said.

The Spanish king and queen visit the Netherlands on Wednesday for an official state visit and Amalia will be present during some of the events, NOS said.
