Fewer Europeans, Asians move to NL as population growth slows
The population of the Netherlands grew by almost 20,000 in the first three months of this year and is likely to top the 18 million mark in the current quarter, national statistics agency CBS said on Friday.
However, the total growth is nearly 8,000 down on the same period in 2023, the CBS said, as more Europeans in particular left the country.
In total, nearly 75,000 people moved to the Netherlands in the first quarter, and 47,700 left, while some 40,000 babies were born and 47,000 people died.
The net number of European immigrants – arrivals minus departures – fell by around one third to 10,000, the CBS figures show. The number of net new arrivals from Asia also fell but by not as much and they now account for the biggest immigrant group.
The CBS also said 96% of the European immigrants who left went to another European country, while only half the Africans who left the Netherlands returned to the African continent.
