“I will knock your block off” Baudet tells Klaver in spat
Thierry Baudet has “damaged the image of politics” by telling GroenLinks MP Jesse Klaver he would “knock his block off”, parliamentary chairman Martin Bosma has said in a letter to the FvD leader.
The incident happened on Wednesday following a debate about an FvD proposal to allow an advisory referendum on the Dutch membership of the EU.
Baudet had already shown signs of irritation at questions about his alleged pro-Russian stance from D66 MP Jan Paternotte. Klaver then asked Baudet whether he was being paid by Russia and to hand over the annual accounts for the Stichting Forum voor Democratie, the association he created in 2014 to organise activities around the Ukraine referendum.
Baudet told him these documents are freely available on the chamber of commerce database but when told by Klaver his search had turned up a “No annual accounts available”, Baudet said he would “knock your block off” if Klaver asked him again.
The microphones had been turned off at the time but the exchange was caught on camera and was heard by witnesses. Baudet admitted he had made the threat because he “was angry”. Klaver then reported the incident to Bosma.
Bosma told Baudet in a letter he would not tolerate threats in parliament and that Baudet had “damaged the image of the lower chamber and politics” . He also told the far right MP to meet him at 9.15 am on Thursday to discuss the incident but he skipped the meeting and apologised to Klaver by phone instead.
No sanctions will be taken against Baudet because the exchange took place outside the meeting.
Klaver called the spat a “new low” and praised Bosma for his quick intervention.
