Dutch nationals arrested in probe into shooting of girl, 11
Two Dutch nationals have been arrested in an investigation into a shooting in Antwerp, in which an 11-year-old girl died, the city’s public prosecution department said on Wednesday.
The investigation into the death and three counts of attempted murder started in January, when the gunmen fired an automatic rifle at the garage door of a private home.
The family was eating dinner in the space behind the door and were hit by gunfire. The girl died and her two sisters aged 13 and 18 and their father were taken to hospital with light injuries.
Police say homes were searched in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Breda on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in connection with the investigation. A man, aged 31 and a 24-year-old woman were arrested and Belgium has now requested their extradition.
According to local paper Gazet van Antwerpen the girl who died was the niece of one of Belgium’s biggest drug smugglers, who lives in Dubai and has a key role in cocaine smuggling via Antwerp port.
In Belgium, a 53-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested in connection with the shooting in February. The man has since been released.
