Dutch more optimistic about economy and quality of life
The Dutch are more optimistic about the Netherlands’ economy than EU nationals are about the EU as a whole, with 20% saying the local economy is in a very good state and 63% saying it is good, according to new research by the Eurobarometer opinion pollsters.
Across Europe as a whole, an average of only 10% say their regional economy is in a very good condition and 53% good, the research, carried out in January, found.
The Dutch are also more positive about the quality of life in the Netherlands, with 37% saying it is very good, and 57% rather good. Across the EU, the figures were 20% and 62% respectively.
Housing is by far the biggest issue in the Netherlands, with 53% saying it is a problem, compared with just 20% across Europe as a whole.
One third of those polled in the Netherlands cited the cost of living as being a major issue, in line with the general EU trend. Immigration was seen as a problem by 16% of those polled in the Netherlands, compared with 13% of Europeans as a whole.
But while 57% of EU citizens as a whole said they would “very likely” vote in the EU elections in June, only 44% of the Dutch thought this was the case.
The Netherlands goes to the polls to elect 31 new MEPs on June 6. EU nationals from another country have until April 22 to sign up to a special register to vote in the Netherlands.
Over 3,600 people took part in the Dutch research.
