Don’t take libido-boosting honey, food safety body warns
The food safety board NVWA issued a warning to consumers on Wednesday not to use honey-based products that claim to improve their sex life.
It is likely that the honey contains illegal substances such as the erection drug Viagra which can have serious side effects and should not be added to foodstuffs, the NVWA said.
The NVWA placed 21 orders for the honey with nine different providers and found libido-boosting drugs in 20 of them. Scientists at Wageningen Food Safety Research are now trying to identify exactly which drugs are involved.
The NVWA has also launched a criminal investigation into a honey trader based in The Hague. Initial testing indicates the erection drugs sildenafil and tadalafil are present in 600 different samples taken for further investigation, the agency said.
Sildenafil if taken in combination with heart medication, can cause very serious side effects, the NVWA said.
