Burning object thrown at Israeli embassy in The Hague
The Israeli embassy in The Hague was cordoned off on Thursday for a time after someone threw a burning object towards the building. One person has been arrested, police said on social media.
The incident happened shortly before 11 am on the Johan de Wittlaan where the embassy is based.
“Such attacks are unacceptable in the Netherlands,” the ambassador said in a statement. “This shows the dangers of the worrying trend of increasing hatred and incitement. This hatred cannot be tolerated.”
The ambassador said he was confident the authorities would take all possible steps to prevent such an incident happening again.
The embassy has been under high security since mid February because of a “serious threat”, The Hague’s mayor Jan van Zanen said earlier. The embassy is closed off by black screens and there is constant security present.
Security has also been stepped up at Jewish schools and synagogues since the Hamas raids of October 7 and the ensuing war in Gaza.
