Activists heckle singer Lenny Kuhr, 74, over Israel links
Pro-Palestine activists have threatened to again disrupt concerts by Eindhoven singer Lenny Kuhr, following trouble at a performance in Waalwijk this weekend.
Kuhr, who won the Eurovision Song Contest with De Troubadour in 1969, was heckled by a small group of protestors who climbed onto the stage and shouted comments during the show in the Noord-Brabant town.
The group, including three women aged around 65, 55 and 25, and a young man, reportedly accused the 74-year-old of being a terrorist and murder. Her children and grandchildren live in Israel and one grandson is currently a member of the IDF.
Kuhr is due to perform in Stadskanaal on Tuesday and the local theatre says it has already had several “unpleasant” phone calls, the AD reported. The local council says it is aware of the situation.
Kuhr has, meanwhile, made a formal police complaint about threatening behaviour, slander and libel. Two of the activists have already been questioned by police, the AD reported on Monday.
Campaign group Palestine Action NL said on social media that Kuhr, who is Jewish, had been targeted because she had publicly said she backed the Israeli action in Gaza.
Caretaker justice minister Dilan Yeşilgöz condemned the protest as “anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic”. “This has nothing to do with being pro-Palestine”, she said. “It is anti-Jew. Let us name and treat this for what it is.”
