House price rise continues, annual increase nears 2% in January
House prices continue to rise, with the average price paid in January up 1.8% on January last year and 1.2% on December 2023, national statistics agency CBS said on Thursday.
The figures come from the CBS and land registry and lag several months behind statistics produced by the NVM estate agents’ association, which are based on agreed, but not completed, sales.
House prices reached a peak in July 2022 and fell for around a year, but have been rising again since June 2023. Despite the higher prices, there were more transactions in January – up 10% on a year ago at 14,400.
Last week the CBS said just 55,000 permits for new homes were handed out last year, down 15% on 2022 and a further sign of the current problems facing the housing market.
In particular, the number of permits for owner-occupier housing fell by 23% to their lowest level for 10 years.
